Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Checklist: 30 Days to Your Grand Opening

Chambridge

Your grand opening happens once. Whether you're launching a boutique, a dental office, a franchise location, or a community center, the ribbon cutting ceremony is the moment your business becomes real to your community — and the photo that moment produces will live on your website, your social media, and your local paper for years.

Here's the complete 30-day checklist we've refined from hundreds of ceremonies our customers have hosted.

30 Days Before: Lock the Foundations

Set the date and time. Tuesday through Thursday, 10 AM–12 PM, gets the best attendance from local officials and press. Avoid Mondays (inbox recovery) and Fridays (early departures).

Contact your Chamber of Commerce. Most chambers offer free ribbon cutting support for members: they'll bring an audience, promote the event in their newsletter, and often send someone with a camera. Some even lend oversized scissors — but their loaner sets are shared across dozens of events and show it. If you want the photo to look sharp, order your own ceremonial scissors and ribbon kit — it also becomes a keepsake for your office wall.

Invite your VIPs. Mayor's office, city council members, your landlord, your bank's branch manager, key suppliers. Officials need 3–4 weeks of lead time — this is the one deadline you cannot compress.

21 Days Before: Build the Guest List

Send invitations — email plus printed cards for officials. Include: date, time, exact address with parking notes, and a line about refreshments.

Notify local press. Your local paper, community Facebook groups, neighborhood apps. A short press release works: who you are, what you're opening, when the ribbon drops, and that photos are welcome.

Order your supplies now, not later. Your checklist: ceremonial scissors (20"–25" reads best on camera), 4–6" wide satin ribbon in your brand color, velvet ropes and stanchions if you're managing a crowd or want a red-carpet entrance, balloons or an arch, and a "Grand Opening" banner. Ordering three weeks out means shipping is never the thing that breaks your ceremony.

14 Days Before: Plan the Moment

Write your 2-minute speech. Thank the community, name the people who helped, say one sentence about what your business will do for the neighborhood. Two minutes, not ten — the crowd is standing.

Choose your ribbon cutters. The owner cuts, but sharing the frame matters: invite the mayor or chamber president to hold the ribbon. More hands in the photo means more people sharing it.

Plan refreshments. Coffee and pastries for a morning ceremony. Nothing that needs plates.

7 Days Before: Confirm Everything

  • Confirm attendance with officials and the chamber
  • Test-cut a strip of your actual ribbon with your actual scissors (satin behaves differently than paper)
  • Assign a photographer — a friend with a good phone works, but brief them: shoot from a low angle, capture the exact moment the blades close, take both horizontal and vertical
  • Charge everything, print your speech

Day Of: The Run Sheet

T-minus 60 min: Set up ribbon across the entrance (waist height, taped or held by stands), position velvet ropes, test the space where the photo happens — no trash cans or parked cars in the background.

T-minus 15 min: Welcome guests, hand coffee, position your VIPs.

The moment: Speech (2 min) → thank-yous → countdown from three → cut → hold the pose for a beat, blades open, ribbon falling. That extra second is where the best photo lives.

After: Invite everyone inside. First sales on opening day come from ceremony guests more often than any other source.

The One Mistake That Ruins the Photo

Small scissors. A standard office pair disappears in a wide shot and makes the biggest moment of your launch look improvised. Ceremonial scissors exist for exactly one reason: they read on camera from thirty feet away. If you invest in nothing else on this list, invest in the scissors and a thick satin ribbon — they're the two things actually in the picture.

Chambridge makes ceremonial scissors from 11" to 25" and grand opening kits with ribbon included, shipped across the US in 3–5 business days. Browse the collection →
