Diwali Grand Opening: How to Open Your Business During Diwali 2026
ChambridgeShare
Diwali falls on Sunday, November 8, 2026 in the United States, with Lakshmi Puja that evening and Dhanteras on Friday, November 6. For many Indian-American and South Asian families, this week is a natural time to open a shop, an office or a new location: the festival celebrates light, prosperity and fresh starts, and in Gujarati tradition the new year begins the day after Diwali. Here is how to plan a Diwali grand opening that honors the blessing and still works as a public ribbon cutting.
Know the 2026 Diwali dates in the US
- Dhanteras: Friday, November 6. A traditional day for buying gold, silver and new utensils.
- Diwali and Lakshmi Puja: Sunday, November 8. Lakshmi, associated with wealth and prosperity, is worshipped that evening. Many Gujarati and Marwari business families perform Chopda Pujan the same day, blessing new account books for the year.
- Gujarati New Year: Monday, November 9. Drik Panchang lists Bestu Varas and Govardhan Puja on Monday for US cities, a day before India (Tuesday, November 10). The usual greeting is Saal Mubarak.
- Labh Pancham: Saturday, November 14. Many Gujarati shop owners restart business on this day after the holidays, and it is considered favorable for new ventures.
US and Indian dates can differ by a day, because a festival date depends on which lunar day is in effect at local sunrise. Confirm with your temple, or set Drik Panchang or your panchang app to your own city.
Pick the date and time with your priest
- Start with your family's tradition. Customs vary by region, community and family. Your priest may suggest Diwali, the new year, Labh Pancham or another day entirely. Jain and Sikh families mark the season in their own ways, so ask rather than assume.
- Get the muhurat in local time. Drik Panchang gives the 2026 Lakshmi Puja muhurat as 5:04 to 6:52 PM in New York and 5:52 to 7:47 PM in Houston, so one national time does not work.
- Split the private and public parts if needed. Diwali is a Sunday this year, when chamber staff and officials may be off. You can hold the puja at the auspicious time with family and the priest, then schedule the public ribbon cutting on a weekday that week. Skip Wednesday, November 11: it is Veterans Day, and many officials have ceremonies of their own.
Combine the puja and the ribbon cutting
Ask your priest how long the puja takes and how to order the two parts. A flow that works for many openings:
- Puja first, inside. Ganesha is traditionally invoked at the start of new ventures, including a business, and Lakshmi is honored at Diwali. Let the priest lead and give guests a clear place to stand.
- Short welcome at the door. Thank the priest, your family and your guests, then give the chamber representative or an official a minute. Our ribbon cutting speech examples include short scripts you can adapt.
- Cut the ribbon together. Invite your parents or an elder to hold the scissors with you. It honors the people who helped you get here.
- Share sweets. Offer prasad from the puja and mithai as guests walk in. Sharing sweets is part of Diwali and keeps guests around.
Decorate the entrance in red, gold and marigold
- Red and gold. Red is widely seen as auspicious in Indian tradition, and gold suits a season that opens with Dhanteras. The Gold and Red Ceremony Kit puts gold scissors and ribbon in one box, or you can browse gold and red scissor handles. Our guide to what ribbon and scissor colors mean covers other pairings.
- Marigold toran over the door. A garland of marigolds and mango leaves across the doorway is a classic Diwali touch and frames the ribbon in photos.
- Rangoli beside the path. Rangoli made from rice flour, colored sand or flower petals traditionally decorates doorways at Diwali. Place it to the side so guests, strollers and wheelchairs do not have to walk through it.
- Scissors that fit the space. At a storefront door, 25-inch red grand opening scissors read well from the sidewalk. For an indoor opening or a small blessing at the counter, the 11-inch Gold Ceremony Kit fits the space and stays on the shelf as a keepsake.
Keep open flames away from the ribbon
- Twelve inches is the minimum. Fire safety guidance says to keep candles at least 12 inches from anything that can burn. At a ribbon cutting that means the ribbon, garlands, paper signs and loose clothing such as saris and dupattas.
- Use a stable, non-combustible base. Set real diyas in non-combustible holders on a stable surface, away from curtains, merchandise and low-hanging decorations.
- Consider LED diyas indoors. Battery-operated LED diyas give the same warm glow without the flame, the safer choice on a shop floor and wherever guests crowd.
- Put one person in charge. Never leave a lit lamp unattended, keep children supervised near flames, and check your lease, mall rules or local fire marshal before planning any open flame.
Invite the community, the chamber and local officials
- Book the chamber early. Call as soon as you have a date; November is a busy month for openings ahead of Small Business Saturday on November 28. Here is how chamber ribbon cuttings work and how to request one.
- Reach your own community. Share the invitation with your temple, community associations, neighbors and regular customers. Add one line explaining the puja so first-time guests know when to watch quietly and when the public part begins.
- Plan the sweets. Order mithai from a local sweet shop and label common allergens such as nuts and dairy. Opening a restaurant or sweet shop? See our restaurant grand opening ideas.
- Get the photos right. Ask the priest whether photos are welcome during the puja, then follow the three ribbon cutting photos that matter. Diyas and string lights look best at dusk.
